AI writing tools have received a lot of press lately, including Jasper AI, Copysmith, and Writesonic. Another one I recently discovered was Quillbot, and after giving it a trial run, I knew I would need to write a Quillbot summary. What does it claim to do, and how effective is it?
I found the free version of Quillbot created realistic-sounding text as good as the more expensive tools like Jarvis. In addition, it includes additional useful tools.

How I Tested Quillbot’s AI writing generator
To test the program, I used an article I posted on another blog about finding good lesson plans. The article, 3 Tips on How to Create an Engaging and Effective Lesson Plan, was written to showcase how to write a listicle-type post that wasn’t fluff.
Because I was using the free version to limit my character count, I worked with a 60-word paragraph.

The highlighted sections were phrases that were not changed. Those would be easy to change: You are not alone could become You are not the first teacher. And takes forever could be replaced with takes an eternity.
Entertaining classes and needed objectives changed the meaning significantly. Engaging and entertaining are not the same, and the objectives are not needed (all lesson plans need objectives) but required—which means the specific objectives need to be used.
Still, it’s a decent paraphrase that would need a minute at most to fix.
Next, I tried the fluency mode, which makes the text read more fluently. In exchange for a more fluent text, it changes less of the text.

For a short sample like this, there weren’t many changes in meaning, and most of the writing was paraphrased. However, it is worrisome that nearly every sentence begins with the same words or phrases.
And entertaining classes would have to be fixed.
Therefore, fluency mode would be an excellent tool for non-English writers who want their writing to sound better. They could plug their writing in and let Quillbot adjust it for fluency.

I decided to use another Quillbot tool to see how well it would spot them. I added several mistakes to the original paragraph and pasted it into Quillbot.

The Co-Writer
An interesting beta feature is Co-Writer. It doesn’t write the text for you. Instead, it looks for websites with the same topic. I used this tool to help me with an article I was writing, and it provided me with several helpful resources.
Bottom Line–Quillbot Summary
I have tried several AI writing tools, and Quillbot is my favorite so far. The others required so much work due to their inaccuracy that I might as well have written them myself. Quillbot would be an excellent resource for writers whose native language is not English, and it can be used to speed up the paraphrasing process–as long as credit is given to the original source.
